This is an infrared photograph from the flash point of one of the most unusual occurrences in United States geological history - the series of earthquakes under Mammoth Lakes in 1989 that unleashed lethal amounts of carbon dioxide which seeped to the Earth's surface and killed thousands of trees in the cherished Eastern Sierra. "The Dead Forest" is a popular attraction for scientists and photographers, but has rarely been photographed in infrared.
In was in this cabin that a forest ranger stationed at Mammoth's Horseshoe Lake became mysteriously ill, which was the first sign of the escaping gas that would eventually kill - and still continues to kill - thousands of trees.
This is a 16X20 gallery print, with the primary image sized at approximately 10X14. It is offered on lustre-coated metallic paper and will be printed by M-Pix Pro, a professional division of Miller's Lab.
